Welcome to the Windoze port of 'AcChen'. A couple of years ago I wrote the NEXTSTEP version of this game. Don Yacktman did a Mac OS X port based on the NEXTSTEP sources. The original ( Sarakon ) version was done on the ATARI ST / Amiga back in 1991.
AcChen is a simple to learn 'find the matching tile' game. To clear a level find two items with identical symbols. The tiles will disappear when you can 'connect' them with a line, which has two or less right angles in it.
The green picks would work the purple one won't. This may sound/look a little complicated, but if you give it a try, you will figure it out in a few minutes... If you pick two items from a different layer, the upper most layer is used for the search algorithm.

Scoring: The first succesful pick scores 0 points. The next pick within 3 seconds, scores 2 points, within 5 seconds 1 point. A pick after 5 seconds starts with 0 points again. After finishing a level, the remaining time is added to you score.

Use the context menu ( right mouse button ) to access the game options. 'Start New Game' starts a game with the currently selected levelset. To choose a different levelset, use the 'Set Level' option and choose the directory the levels are stored. The package includes the 'classic' levels from the NEXTSTEP version, 'Sarakon' levels from the original game and a 'default' levelset.

The Leveleditor
You can create your own levelsets. To enter the leveleditor, choose the 'Level Editor -> Edit Mode' menu. Use 'Level Editor -> Load Level' to load and modify an existing Level. Save your changes with 'Level Editor -> Save Level' to the current file or choose 'Level Editor -> Save Level As' to store the level in a different file/folder.

To create your own levelset just create a new subdirectory and name your levels '1.lv', '2.lvl'... A highscore list will be  created automatically for each levelset.

Keys:

  • Left Shift + Left Mouse Button -> remove stone
  • 'S' + Left Mouse Button -> Set solid stone
  • '+' on Number Block -> Load next level without saving changes to the current level
  • '-' on Number Block -> Load previous level without saving changes to the current level
'Level Editor -> Save Level' and 'Level Editor -> Save Level As' will bring up this dialog. You can modify the time the player gets to complete the level, and you can change to difficulty of the level. The difficulty is implemented through a variation of 'quads' ( items that will appear 4 times in a layer ) and 'pairs' ( items that will appear 2 times in a layer ). The more 'pairs' a layer contains the more difficult it gets. Before saving a level please check that the number of stones per layer is even. Otherwise the level is not playable ( this check is not performed by the software yet ).

Due to a lack of time this description is rather brief. If you have any comments, cheers or flames please don't  hesitate to contact me :). You are more than welcome to design some nice levelsets or new grafix. I'll include them in the next release.

Julia Letoutchaia ( letoutc1@msu.edu ) was kind enough to let me use her beautiful 'yinyan' picture as a backgound image for the highscorelist. The original image can be found here . Thanks a lot Julia =).
